As we take our first gentle steps into 2024, Iâd love to share one of my favourite habits with you: journaling. Iâve always had a âsecretâ diary, but these days I go with a standard unlocked (shock!) journal. I just write a bit about whatâs happening in my life, whatâs worrying me, what Iâm excited about, sad about, and so on.
But there are other types of journaling you can explore if you havenât done it before. Letâs jump in.
Why journal?
Life is pretty fast-paced for most of us. Why not slow things down a bit? Journaling provides a safe space for you to untangle your thoughts, express your feelings, and capture those fleeting moments that make your day.
As you build this habit, you might be surprised by the ripple effect it can have on your life. Iâm talking increased self-awareness, stress relief, and sharper problem-solving skills thanks to that extra time spent sitting with your thoughts and feelings.
Types of journaling
1. Free writing
Let your thoughts spill onto the paper without any specific structure. This is a great way to release pent-up emotions and get clarity.
2. Gratitude journaling
Cultivate a positive mindset by jotting down things you're grateful for. It's a simple practice that can shift your focus towards the positive aspects of life.
3. Bullet journaling (Bujo)
For the more organized souls, a bullet journal can be a game-changer. Create to-do lists, track habits, and document your goals in a structured yet creative way.
4. Art journaling
Combine words with visuals. Use drawings, paintings, or collages to express your feelings and experiences. It's a therapeutic way to tap into your creativity.
And rememberâŚ
It's natural to feel a bit stuck or a bit weird when you're just starting out with a new habit, especially if you donât typically spend much time at all writing. Just remember, your journal is a judgment-free zone. Don't worry about perfect grammar, spelling, or handwriting. Let your thoughts flow without restraint.
And finally, journaling is a journey, not a destination. Don't stress about creating a masterpiece with every entry. Consistency is key, and each entry is a step in the name of self-care. Happy journaling, and donât forget to share your thoughts and tips below!
